People with mental retardation in collaboration with their families, friends, Independent Supports Coordinator, and community, CAN ACHIEVE their goals throughout their lives.  The Independent Supports Coordinator is a tool as well as an advocate that people with mental retardation can use in pursuit of their wants, needs, and DREAMS.
What is Independent Supports Coordination?

Mon Valley Supports Coordination (MVSC) locates, coordinates, and monitors support services for people with mental retardation.  A few examples of Independent Supports Coordination (ISC) functions are:  actively advocating for individuals' social, physical, and emotional needs and assisting individuals and their families in navigating the social service system.  Over the course of a year, MVSC serves approximately 800 individuals and their families.  The goal of MVSC is to enhance or maintain the best quality of life for the people we serve.

Who is Eligible?

Children and adults with a diagnosis of mental retardation.  Onset must occur prior to age 22.

What Services Do You Typically Offer?

There are two funding streams utilized at MVSC to obtain support services for individuals.  Family Supports Services (FSS) and Medical Waiver.  FSS provides support to people living independently or with family in the community.  Funding for an individual is determined by a profile scale and the availability of funds.  Some examples of services we coordinate include companions, respite, and recreational opportunities.  Second, Medical Waiver is a federal and state funded program for people who live at home or in residential homes.  Funding for an individual is determined on needs and the availability of funds.  Some examples of services we coordinate include habilitation, adaptive equipment, transportation and nursing services.  In both programs the individual and his or her family determine the use of funds, within certain guidelines.
